Textual analysis of contents pages

I looked at the similarities and difficulties of the contents pages of ‘word’ and ‘NME’ and this is what I came up with:

1. Mise-en-scene

The people on the contents page of Word are dressed much more smartly than those in NME. Those in NME are more casually dressed. The lighting in Word is higher key than NME. There are a range of different facial expressions in Word then in NME there facial expressions look as if they are concentrating on their performance. The body language in NME is natural as they are singing whereas the body language of the actors in Word are more posed. In both magazines the prop that is used is a guitar. Lastly, the background is not clear in the contents page of word whereas in NME you can clearly tell they are in a concert.

2. Music artist profiles

There are six different music profiles in the contents page of Word and just one min one in NME.

3. Layout and style of language

The layout of the contents page of Word is very boring and plain where NME looks better laid out with more information and more things to look at. The language of Word uses quotes from interviews of stars only. The language of NME is informal because it uses words such as “Oasis kicked off their world tour” it would be worded much differently if ti was formally written.

4. Any music genre conventions?

Word is fairly simple and has the standard way but NME is very cramped and looks more stuffy and a bit indie whereas Word is more than one type of genre.

5. Regular sections of the magazine

It isn’t clear what the regular sections of the magazine are as the contents page of Word is very limited in its description. However in NME it is clear that it has all the typical album/single reviews and new bands etc.

Proposal form for music magazine

Proposal 2 – Identifying the brief

I have chosen the brief R&B music because I listen to the genre of music often. Therefore I thought it would be easy and enjoyable to make a magazine for it. I also thought that I will be more likely for me to know what my readers want to know, as I’m interested in the genre myself; I know a depth of knowledge of this particular type of music. Furthermore there are very few R&B magazines out already so thought it would be a challenging task to undertake.

The core audience profile I am planning to target is 13-25 year olds, mostly female but some male. They like to keep up with the latest fashion and trends. They also like linked genres of music such as hip hop and rap. They like to go out to clubs and parties and like a very eventful lifestyle. This lifestyle is what the magazine will promote, along with the view that women are strong and independent. They have great night lives and are always seen living it to the full.

I’m planning to style the front cover with a new and exclusive R’n’B artist on the cover, with a big bold title of ‘Rhymes ‘n’ Beats’ with appropriate coverlines and distinctive colours. With a free CD included on the bottom left section. I choose to call my magazine ‘Rhymes ‘n’ Beats’ as it is straight to the point. The audience knows exactly what the magazine is going to be about and what type of music it is going to be based on. The actor I will be using will be posed as a made up new and exclusive R&B artist who will be portrayed very laid back and cool. He will be wearing fresh new clothes looking very stylish. The cover shot that I will be using will most likely be a medium long shot.

The type of content that my magazine will include will be things such as album/single reviews, new and old artist interviews and new downloadable tracks. The type of language that will be included within the magazine is quite informal. With use of words such as ‘aint’ and ‘yer’ as I want it to appeal to the targeted audience and stereotypically, this is how the reader would talk.

My magazine offers a great alternative from the magazines already on the market for this particular genre as there aren’t many already out. I searched for magazines of the same genre but only found one called ‘Chocolate’ which didn’t seem to be that popular. Therefore my magazine will offer a greater and much more up to date source of information of the R&B world.

Top of the pops language analysis

Within this analysis I have discussed the language of the magazine ‘Top of the Pops’, discussed the structure, how it targets its audience and what it tells us about the magazine.
The magazine ‘Top of the pops’ is a successful and popular magazine. It is very clear who the target audience is just by looking at the front cover. The target audience is young teenage girls. You can tell this by the band on the front cover, The Jonas Brothers who are a young, good looking band of brothers who are very appealing to young girls. The language has been chosen very carefully to draw in its target audience. It targets its audience by using slang words and shortening of words such as ‘OMG’ and ‘pics’ this makes the audience feel like they can relate to the magazine and make them believe that it is a cool and up to date magazine to read.
On the front cover it is clear that they have purposely included lots of girl interests to draw them in such as ‘Your instant makeover’ as girls always like to look good and ‘Exclusive pics! 24 hours with ZAC’ as most teenage girls have crushes of Zac Effron. Each coverline is short and catchy and draws your eye right in. Everything which is mentioned on the front is there because it’s the main contents of this magazine, so individual words are essential for them selling their magazine. A lot of explanation marks are included on the magazine which shows very informal and chatty language.

Looking inside the magazine at the second page is an interview of the Jonas Brothers. The language again is very casual and chatty and not too long. Therefore again this shows how the magazine targets its audience. The responses from the Jonas brothers within the questions are very enthusiastic and they come across really ‘cool’ and they often talk about dating girls which is what young teenage girls like to read. They seem to come across really happy and excited which is a positive tone which will have a positive effect on the reader. The structure is very good and relevant as it shows a clear indication of the question then answer in a short paragraph instead of long paragraphs with quotes from the band hear and there. It also includes a lot of pictures throughout the page which makes it easier and more interesting to read for a teenage girl.

Also in parts of the magazine there are sentences like ‘Its time you found out what all the fuss is about’ which is as if they are talking to the reader. It also includes rhetorical questions which makes the reader feel involved and it makes them relate to what is being said. The whole spread has a sense of rhythm via the punctuality as there’s a lot of comers and ‘…’ which makes it seem to flow better and makes it more reader friendly.

The magazine uses celebrities to help draw in the target audience. Within the magazine they have included celebrities talking about subjects that teenage girls can relate to. For example they have a section on the front cover of McFly, a well known and successful band, talking about ‘Our hidden heartache’. Most teenage girls can relate to this and they will automatically think it must not just happen to them and it must not be that much of a bad thing if it’s happened to a good looking and popular band such as McFly.

To conclude, the overall language of the magazine, top of the pops is informal, chatty, gossipy and enthusiastic. It is targeted at young teenage girls and this is clearly shown by the chosen language and is successful. It is very basic and easy to understand which is useful for the intended reader. The language suits the target audience very well and the kind of music magazine that it is.

Questionnaire results

From looking at the findings of my questionnaires I have found out that not many teenagers aged 16 -18 buy music magazines. But if they do they buy them with the money of their parents or EMA and are prepared to pay from 2 – 3 pounds on the magazine. Most of them said they would like a well known artist to appear on the front cover of the magazine and they all wanted an interview of their favourite artist to be included within the magazine. Lastly, the things that interested them most about music magazines are the gossip and news they find out about their favourite artists.

Analysis of two reader profiles

Analysis of two reader profiles

I have analysed two different magazine reader profiles. Each has very different target audiences, as both are very different styled music magazines.
They both have many differences in the information that is included within the reader profile, which I shall elaborate on further.

Firstly the target audience of the music magazine ‘Word’ is aged between 30- 55 and are within the ABC1 grouping. The ‘NME’ magazine is more targeted to an average of 24 and 65% of it readers are in the ABC1 group. The NME magazine is more of a male-targeted magazine as 69% of its readers are of a male gender. The Word reader spends over £90 on music, films and books whereas the NME reader spends £71 on DVD’s alone a year. A family man is the type of reader of Word whereas NME’s readers are younger and experimental and like going to live gigs and festivals. The word reader listens to radio channel 4 unlike NME’s reader who listens to such music as indie and rock. Lastly, other interests of the word reader are such things as reading books and watching movies. On the other hand, the NME reader’s interests would be to try out the latest technology such as games consoles or to learn about the latest fashion as 63% of readers believe that it is important to look good.

Advertisements that would be most likely to be used within word would be music stores such as HMV and Zavvi, new films coming out in the cinema and on DVD, Myspace, Facebook and other social networking websites and books. Advertisements that would be most likely to be used within NME would be Big events like festivals, Designer clothing such as Fred Perry and converse, new games and consoles, new technology such as cameras and phones, hair products such as shockwaves gel and alcohol.

To conclude there are a few similarities about the two magazines such as both magazines are directed mostly at the male gender. However there are quite a few differences. The word reader is older, family man, more sophisticated whereas the NME reader is younger, outgoing and up for trying out new things.

Proposal form

Proposal form

Proposal 1 – Identify the brief:

I have chosen the design brief of sixth formers. The main and most obvious reason for this is because I am a sixth former myself and believed that it would be a good target audience to make a magazine for. This is because I can include my own views and opinions and I’m more likely to know and gather information easier about what sixth formers want.
The title that I have chosen to use is ‘Student Life’. It is relevant to the target audience and is quite a simple yet appealing name.
The lifestyle that the magazine will promote is a fun lifestyle however hard-working at the same time. It will portray that you can have a sensible sense of fun in sixth form and still achieve the right grades at the same time.
The general idea behind my magazine is to provide sixth formers with entertainment and knowledge. It will contain information that sixth formers need all in one place.
My front cover will contain a bold, bright, reasonable sized masthead so that it will attract and look appealing to the target audience. The main picture will be a mid shot picture of an attractive sixth former. It will have a series of significant cover lines down the side. Overall, I will be going for a sophisticated and stylish cover style.
Examples of magazine content that will be included are things like; Changes such as new teachers and vertical tutoring, Exam success of the GCSE results, House competitions and their wins and loses, future education and a variety of activities and quiz’s to make the magazine a little more interesting.
The language that I will be using on the front cover words and phrases. Also I will use phrases such as ‘exam success’ and ‘your future’ as they are quite positive phrases which will give a positive vibe to the magazine.
The school magazine that I will be producing is a good alternative to magazines that are currently on the market for sixth formers. This is because it will be both fun and educational for the reader. It will help them with decisions for the future and will keep them up to date with activities within school. Magazines that are on offer at the moment are mostly opposite to what I will be producing as they are mostly full of fashion and gossip so it will give my target audience a chance to learn about different things in their spare time.

Magazine presentation

Slide 2

The costume of both celebrities on the main cover are particularly fashionable. The choice of outfit has been well thought through as Renee's dress is enhanced by George's dark suit.

The lighting is natural.

The actors are middle class, they are of an age range of late thirties to late forties, they are female and male, both are white and heterosexual. Their facial expressions are neutral and a cheeky smile. Their posture is both friendly and flirtatious.

The overall use of make-up is a natural appearance with use of special effects on both actors. However in my opinion, the special effects have been used more on Renee. Their isn't a heavy use of props, just a simple bracelet to match with Renee’s outfit.

The use of setting hasn’t been concentrated on within this shoot, just a plain white background has been used to make the rest of the features stand out. I believe, this is because the actors are famous enough to sell the magazine without an elaborate background.

The reason that I choose to analysis this particular magazine cover was because the actors are known to be humorous, down to earth which makes it appealing to read.

How to read any ad - burberry print

Media Miss Brookes

Burberry London

A. From looking at the print media we can get a clear indication to what the people are like. The woman is middle to upper class due to the brand in which she is advertising and the clothes she is wearing. We can also get an idea of her class from looking at her body language as the way she is standing , with her hand on her hips, is quite authoritive. She seems as though she is in her late twenties because of the little child.
There is also a young girl in the photo who looks about two years old. She too looks upper class by the clothes she is wearing and the look of happiness on her face. She looks well behaved as she is sitting quietly on floor at her mothers’ feet.
The young girl seems as though she has been given a little present as she is holding a box with a bow on it. This suggests that they are wealthy and can afford to spoil the daughter.
The ad looks like it is indoors because of the wooden floor and they just moved in to a new apartment and haven’t get decorated as there are steps and cloths on the floor. The background is very plain and basic to make the clothing and women stand out.
Burberry London is the product which here they are advertising clothes. The product is in the middle to make it stand out.

B. The visual techniques used within the print media is photography and photo editing to make the women look perfect so that people that buy their clothing will get to look like her. The photo is in black and white, which makes it look more professional, and the products more up market. The room is indoor lighting and it quite high lit as there are no shadows. This gives it a natural effect.
The shot is a long two shot as we can see her whole body plus the little girl on the floor.
The first thing your eye is drawn to is the women’s coat because of it being so dark and bold compared to the background and the rest of the picture. The pattern also makes it stick out.
The image has been cropped because we can see only half of the stall. It looks as if they have just moved in and are decorating their new apartment.
The image has been edited from colour into black and white and the women looks as though she has been airbrushed as she has a perfect complexion.
The main image is in full focus however the background is blurry. This is because they want to make the main image stand out and not be over stage by extra props.
The layout of the this print media, the main image takes up the centre of the page with the writing of ‘Burberry’ which goes over the image. There is small print at the bottom, which isn’t very noticeable and just promotes where this product can be brought. The other piece of text is sideways up the side which promotes the website.

C. The brand name is Burberry London and this suggests that the brand is mainly for the upper class, people who would go hunting used to wear the product. However recently Burberry has been linked to ‘chav’ boys and girls. So now Burberry feels they have to go back to the extreme of making it look like it is for the upper class.
There isn’t a slogan because it is such a well known make that it doesn’t need to have one.
There is no language used it just gives you the image. It isn’t trying to show you a situation or sell you a story just the clothes in which the women and little girl is wearing.
It doesn’t seem to be similar to any other type of ad or genre, it is unique.
The different types of faces used are both bold and in capital letters. The lettering is spaced out and is basic and plain not all fancy and unreadable. The reason they have been used is to make you notice it and so that it is easy for you to read.

D. The story of this print media is that a mother and her daughter have moved into a new house and haven’t yet decorated it. The mum seems to have given her little girl a present because she has been well behaved during the move. They seem to be quiet wealthy from looking at the way they are dressed and the position that the lady is standing in, with her hand on her hip and leg sticking out.
The ad is aimed at the upper and wealthy class. People who like and into fashion and want to look well presented and smart.
The print would appear in a magazine aimed at the upper class women for example Vogue and Marie Clair. The picture would properly go in either the middle or back pages because the front page isn’t used for advertising clothes it wants to sell the magazine and the stories inside. It could be on the back however because most magazines use an advert to draw more people to buy the magazine.
The producers must be wealthy to work for such a big and well-known company. They much of wanted to make the coat be eye catching and the background plain and bland.
Many of Burberrys products are very similar and all use the same kind of layout. And contrasting the background with the product itself.

E. The overall message of the ad is saying that if you buy Burberry that you will look as sophisticated and successful and have a wealthy family too.
The women who is wealthy is shown to be stereotypically stuck up and looking down her nose on people.
