Magazine presentation

Slide 2

The costume of both celebrities on the main cover are particularly fashionable. The choice of outfit has been well thought through as Renee's dress is enhanced by George's dark suit.

The lighting is natural.

The actors are middle class, they are of an age range of late thirties to late forties, they are female and male, both are white and heterosexual. Their facial expressions are neutral and a cheeky smile. Their posture is both friendly and flirtatious.

The overall use of make-up is a natural appearance with use of special effects on both actors. However in my opinion, the special effects have been used more on Renee. Their isn't a heavy use of props, just a simple bracelet to match with Renee’s outfit.

The use of setting hasn’t been concentrated on within this shoot, just a plain white background has been used to make the rest of the features stand out. I believe, this is because the actors are famous enough to sell the magazine without an elaborate background.

The reason that I choose to analysis this particular magazine cover was because the actors are known to be humorous, down to earth which makes it appealing to read.

How to read any ad - burberry print

Media Miss Brookes

Burberry London

A. From looking at the print media we can get a clear indication to what the people are like. The woman is middle to upper class due to the brand in which she is advertising and the clothes she is wearing. We can also get an idea of her class from looking at her body language as the way she is standing , with her hand on her hips, is quite authoritive. She seems as though she is in her late twenties because of the little child.
There is also a young girl in the photo who looks about two years old. She too looks upper class by the clothes she is wearing and the look of happiness on her face. She looks well behaved as she is sitting quietly on floor at her mothers’ feet.
The young girl seems as though she has been given a little present as she is holding a box with a bow on it. This suggests that they are wealthy and can afford to spoil the daughter.
The ad looks like it is indoors because of the wooden floor and they just moved in to a new apartment and haven’t get decorated as there are steps and cloths on the floor. The background is very plain and basic to make the clothing and women stand out.
Burberry London is the product which here they are advertising clothes. The product is in the middle to make it stand out.

B. The visual techniques used within the print media is photography and photo editing to make the women look perfect so that people that buy their clothing will get to look like her. The photo is in black and white, which makes it look more professional, and the products more up market. The room is indoor lighting and it quite high lit as there are no shadows. This gives it a natural effect.
The shot is a long two shot as we can see her whole body plus the little girl on the floor.
The first thing your eye is drawn to is the women’s coat because of it being so dark and bold compared to the background and the rest of the picture. The pattern also makes it stick out.
The image has been cropped because we can see only half of the stall. It looks as if they have just moved in and are decorating their new apartment.
The image has been edited from colour into black and white and the women looks as though she has been airbrushed as she has a perfect complexion.
The main image is in full focus however the background is blurry. This is because they want to make the main image stand out and not be over stage by extra props.
The layout of the this print media, the main image takes up the centre of the page with the writing of ‘Burberry’ which goes over the image. There is small print at the bottom, which isn’t very noticeable and just promotes where this product can be brought. The other piece of text is sideways up the side which promotes the website.

C. The brand name is Burberry London and this suggests that the brand is mainly for the upper class, people who would go hunting used to wear the product. However recently Burberry has been linked to ‘chav’ boys and girls. So now Burberry feels they have to go back to the extreme of making it look like it is for the upper class.
There isn’t a slogan because it is such a well known make that it doesn’t need to have one.
There is no language used it just gives you the image. It isn’t trying to show you a situation or sell you a story just the clothes in which the women and little girl is wearing.
It doesn’t seem to be similar to any other type of ad or genre, it is unique.
The different types of faces used are both bold and in capital letters. The lettering is spaced out and is basic and plain not all fancy and unreadable. The reason they have been used is to make you notice it and so that it is easy for you to read.

D. The story of this print media is that a mother and her daughter have moved into a new house and haven’t yet decorated it. The mum seems to have given her little girl a present because she has been well behaved during the move. They seem to be quiet wealthy from looking at the way they are dressed and the position that the lady is standing in, with her hand on her hip and leg sticking out.
The ad is aimed at the upper and wealthy class. People who like and into fashion and want to look well presented and smart.
The print would appear in a magazine aimed at the upper class women for example Vogue and Marie Clair. The picture would properly go in either the middle or back pages because the front page isn’t used for advertising clothes it wants to sell the magazine and the stories inside. It could be on the back however because most magazines use an advert to draw more people to buy the magazine.
The producers must be wealthy to work for such a big and well-known company. They much of wanted to make the coat be eye catching and the background plain and bland.
Many of Burberrys products are very similar and all use the same kind of layout. And contrasting the background with the product itself.

E. The overall message of the ad is saying that if you buy Burberry that you will look as sophisticated and successful and have a wealthy family too.
The women who is wealthy is shown to be stereotypically stuck up and looking down her nose on people.
